Brief History

A couple of ladies went on holiday to a hotel on the Isle of Wight where there was a croquet lawn. On returning to the Medway towns, they contacted the local council, who found an area at the local pitch and putt course, and we established ourselves at Snodhurst Bottom. The first constitution was established in 1991.

The lawn was literally three feet higher at one end than the other, but it was fun there and everyone learnt a little about the game. This was part of a municipal set-up, but we had to pay an admission fee every time we played, and we had to leave at 7.30 every evening.

It dawned on members that something better was needed. The hunt for potential lawns began, and eventually in 1993, Cobdown was found, which had no lawns, but one or two grassy areas and a car park, which we now call lawn 1. In 1993, lawn 2 was prepared by a JCB with help from members.

In 1996, a lottery grant was applied for to create a new lawn and pavilion.

In 1997, members played on the old tennis courts, now lawn 4. Two members represented England at the World Golf Croquet Championships in Cairo, and three members helped Kent win the Golf Inter Counties Championship.

In May 1999, the pavilion was opened by local MP Jonathan Shaw. The same year we won a national club competition, and our first Club member was asked to represent Kent at association croquet.

In the interest of security please ensure that all equipment is locked away when leaving the lawns, even if only for a short time.
